The phrase "Resonating with People and Nature" expresses the Suntory Group's raison d'être and the goals to which we aspire: to strive through our corporate activities to contribute to the realization of a truly abundant society, aiming at the rich development of a life culture based on people’s needs and the sound preservation of a global environment that can provide a foundation for this culture to flourish, while resonating with the world’s people and the varied natural environments in which they live.
As good corporate citizens guided by this corporate philosophy, we are committed to providing products and services targeting the highest quality, and to contributing to the development of the life culture of people throughout the world.
Water for Life, Suntory
In 2004, Suntory adopted the corporate message "Water for Life, Suntory" as a means of sharing our corporate philosophy, "Resonating with People and Nature", with more members of society. We discovered images of suppleness and pliability, moisture, nature, flexibility and fresh vitality in the word “water” and integrated this with Suntory’s unique individuality. This corporate message also expresses the Suntory Group’s determination to "continually challenge new themes with the flexibility of water" as well as to "protect water, a finite and precious resource of our Earth" and to serve as a source of "“water nourishing a society that exists in harmony with nature through cultural and social contribution activities".
Harmonious Coexistence with Nature as the Starting Point
Flowing through our corporate philosophy is a spirit of "harmonious coexistence with nature". Nearly every Suntory product is a gift of nature, and a reverence for nature has been nurtured in each employee since our foundation.
Suntory wine, the original cornerstone of our business, has been produced on the premise of good grape cultivation since our pioneering days. Our whisky, beer and beverages are made from selected agricultural produce, including barley, hops, tea leaves and fruits, with pure water as the basic ingredient. Our whisky distilleries are located in the Yamazaki Ravine in the outskirts of Kyoto and at the foot of Mt. Kaikomagatake in the Southern Japan Alps, both of which areas are famous for their excellent water. Our four breweries at Musashino, Kyoto, Tonegawa and Kumamoto also enjoy an abundance of pure underground water. We make sure, moreover, that roughly half of each brewery site is devoted to greenery.
For human life to retain its glow, all life on Earth must glow as well. With this in mind, Suntory is committed to seeking a happy and harmonious coexistence of human beings and nature.
A Challenging Spirit, an Entrepreneur Spirit and a Customer-oriented Spirit
Established over a century ago in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii, Suntory has a proud history of pursuing new businesses with a pioneer spirit in every stage of its development. We blazed trails on a new frontier by introducing Western liquor culture to Japan with the production of Akadama Port Wine, a sweet-tasting fruit wine, and with the launch of Japan’s first whisky business. A succession of forays into the beer, food products and beverage businesses followed as we took on new challenges and created new markets one after another.
These spirits of challenge and entrepreneurship are accompanied by a strong customer orientation that inspires us to listen carefully to our customers’ opinions and to create, nurture and develop markets in partnership with them. Unchanged since our foundation, these corporate spirits of challenge and entrepreneurship and our customer orientation provide the driving force to keep our business moving forward.
Conducting Social and Cultural Activities Based on the "Principle of Dividing Profits Three Ways"
Suntory pursues wide-ranging social and cultural activities, the origins of which date back to the "Principle of Dividing Profits Three Ways" espoused by the Company’s founder, Shinjiro Torii. Shinjiro firmly believed that one-third of the profits of business should be returned to customers and another third to society—a belief that was unmistakably reflected in his enthusiasm for philanthropic projects in support of the disadvantaged and for social welfare activities.
This founder’s spirit has been passed down to the present. Further augmented by the concept of corporate citizenship, it has led to innumerable positive accomplishments. These range from our cultural activities in various fields, as represented by the Suntory Museum of Art, Suntory Music Foundation, Suntory Foundation, Suntory Hall and Suntory Museum Tempozan, to our efforts to solve issues concerning protection of our global environment and to the promotion of our Kid’s Dream Project.
