Suntory researchers
recognized for improving brewing process
A U.S. industry body has recognized two Suntory
research chemists for their efforts to improve
the beer-making process. Masaaki Uchida and Miyoko
Ono, of Suntory's Product Development Research
Center, received the Eric-Kneen Memorial Award
for devising a method to reduce oxidation during
the brewing process. Antioxidation is the key to
preserving the fizzy taste in beer.
The Suntory researchers were recognized by The
American Society of Brewing Chemists, which is
dedicated to improving brewing methods. Ms Ono
also received the association's Exceptional Lifetime
Achievement in the Science of Brewing award. She
is the first person from Japan to be so honored.
The awards were handed out at the Society's annual
convention on June 27.

Suntory holding
lecture tours at eco-friendly breweries
Suntory will hold lecture tours at three of its
breweries in order to teach visitors about the
company's efforts towards zero emissions. The special
summer program has been designed for youngsters
at the sixth-grade level and above, as well as
their parents.
The tours will be conducted at three Suntory breweries
which have achieved recycling rates of 100%. Participants
will learn about various ecological issues and
each tour will be followed by a quiz and game session,
which will reinforce the information they have
received in an enjoyable manner.
This the third year for the tours to be conducted.
A total of 10,000 people have participated in them
to date and the tours have proven popular.

Suntory to
launch The great cocktails campaign
Suntory will kick off a nationwide campaign to
promote it's The great
cocktails line. The campaign will start
in mid-July and conclude on Sept. 17.
During the campaign, the company will give away
1,000 gift packages that contain 16 types of original
goods, including original T-shirts and Zippo lighters.
As a second-place prize, the company will give
away 9,000 gift packages that contain an original
T-shirt and 2 types of mobile phone straps.

Suntory to
hold annual summer music festival
The Suntory Music Foundation will hold its annual
summer music festival, titled MUSIC
TODAY 21, from August 19 to 30 at Suntory
Hall. Programs include an orchestra concert series
featuring internationally acclaimed contemporary
composers as well as a concert with a special theme,
workshops on various Japanese composers, and the
11th Akutagawa Award nomination concert.
Founded in 1969 to mark Suntory's 70th anniversary,
the foundation promotes a variety of events involving
classical music in Japan. The company created the
Suntory Music Award the same year to recognize
services that contribute to the development of
Western classical music in Japan.

Suntory to
kick off Magnum dry campaign
Suntory will launch a nationwide promotional campaign on behalf of Magnum dry light malt beer starting in June. Approximately seven million sample products will be distributed at major train stations mainly to business people on their way home from work. Prizes will also be distributed via a drawing, which consumers can enter at retail stores. A brand new TV commercial has also been created to support the summer campaign.

Entrants for "Cocktail Competition 2001"
Suntory and Suntory Foods are looking for professional bartenders to compete in Cocktail Competition 2001. The contest will consist of three sections, including a short dry cocktail, short sweet cocktail and long cocktail. The final round of competition will take place October 26 at Hotel Okura in Tokyo following two preliminary rounds. The winner will receive a trophy, certificate and free trip to Europe, where further training in the art of drink mixing will be offered. The application deadline is August 9.

Suntory will begin marketing C.C. Lemon Vitamin C Supplement <granule> on June 26. A 30 g bag will retail for 250 yen. The product comes in addition to C.C. Lemon, the popular carbonated health drink. It has been added to simplify the process of supplementing one's diet.

Suntory will begin marketing commemorative bottles
of Suntory Whisky ROYAL
PREMIUM 15 Years Old and ROYAL
12 Years Old on a limited basis on August
7 to mark the upcoming 29th Suntory Open Golf Tournament.
The tournament is slated for September 5-9, 2001.
A 500ml container of ROYAL
PREMIUM 15 Years Old is being marketed
in an owl-shaped bottle for 10,000 yen, while 100ml
of ROYAL 12 Years Old
in a golf ball-shaped vessel is priced at 1,400
yen.

Suntory will begin marketing the popular French
aperitif "Boulard Pommeau de Normandie" on June
12. A 700ml bottle will retail for 2000 yen.
The product is a liqueur made of high-quality apple
juice and a premium apple brandy dubbed "Calvados," which is produced by Boulard.

Renowned Portuguese Wines
Suntory will begin marketing three types of Madeira
wine on June 12. "East India Madeira Fine Dry (750ml)"
and "East India Madeira Fine Rich (750ml)" will
retail for 1,200 yen each. "East India Madeira
10 Years Old (750ml)" is priced at 2,500 yen.
One of Portugal's best known wines, Madeira is
produced on an island which bears its name.

Health Food Product Line
Suntory will add Shizen-no Chikara Aojiru Goya, a new fiber supplement, to its health food line-up starting on June 26. The granulated product will be sold by mail order. A 60-bag container of Shizen-no Chikara Aojiru Goya is priced at 1,600 yen. Suntory previously launched another health food supplement, dubbed Shizen-no Chikara (natural power), in March 2001.

Suntory will begin marketing SUPER
CHU-HI <white Peach> on June 26
to promote sales of the Shochu-based alcoholic
product. A 350ml can will retail for 140 yen.
The company launched the product in 1999 and sold
14 million cases in 2000, up 40% from the previous
year. Suntory's SUPER CHU-HI
is now ranked as the nation's top-selling chu-hi
brand.

Display Western and Oriental Glass Art
The Suntory Museum of Art will hold an exhibition of over 140 works of glass art from its own collection from August 7 through September 24. The glass art to be displayed includes masterpieces which were produced from the 16th through 20th centuries in Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Japan England, China, Poland, France and elsewhere.

From mid-June, Suntory will begin a campaign to promote its Zen whisky. During the campaign, the company will give away a small bamboo basket. The basket can be used to serve typical Japanese appetizers, such as boiled beans, which go well with Zen whisky. Other Japanese dishes are suited to the product as well. The gift will come with each 640ml bottle of Zen whisky sold.

Yu-suzumi distilled spirit
Suntory will begin marketing Yu-suzumi
distilled spirit especially for the summer season
starting on July 17. A 1.8L paper pack will retail
for 1,250 yen.
The product is made of 100% pure malt. It features
a light-sharp taste and is best served on the rocks
or merely chilled. The packaging features a nostalgic
image of summer in Japan.

Suntory starts
sales of Monica Cranberry Liqueur
Suntory has begun marketing Monica Cranberry Liqueur.
The product, which retails for 2,500 yen (750ml
bottle), hit store shelves June 19.
Liquer sales have been on the rise in recent years
thanks to the growing popularity of cocktail drinks,
especially fruit flavored ones. U.S. cranberries
have also gained a reputation as a healthy fruit.
