Suntory to release special labels for Greek Wine “Boutari Kretikos”

Suntory Ltd. (Head Office: Osaka, President: Nobutada Saji) is to release “Bourati Kretikos” (Red / White) with special labels, produced by a distinguished Greek winery, “Boutari”, from 20 April 2004 across Japan nationwide.

Recently, Japan’s wine market has steadily expanded to offer a variety of wines from all over the world. General attentions towards Greek wine and dishes are seen to rise, with the coming Olympics in Greece this year. In such a trend, Suntory is to release a Greek wine, “Boutari Kretikos”, specially labeled for Japan.

“Boutari Kretikos” is regularly drunk around the world, as wine that represents Crete. It is made by various grapes from ancient times such as white Vilana, red Kotsifali and Mandilaria, which all grew on sunny fields located in the northern part of Crete and received faint breeze from the Aegean Sea.

• Feature of the Label Design

The grand decorated wall-painting of the Palace of Knossos is designed in the center, to inspire Greek-ness. The strikingly vivid and bright colored wall-painting of “The Blue Ladies” was painted, in the motif of the beautiful Greek women in the ancient time, on the Palace of Knossos that flourished as the heartland of Crete (Minoan) Civilization around the 2nd century B.C. Red wine is designed with red color to bring images of Palace of Knossos’ pillars, and white wine is designed with blue for the Aegean Sea.

“Boutari Kretikos (Red) 2002”
Red wine with mild aroma of black cherries and soft taste, using Kotsifali and Mandilania grapes, representing Crete.

“Boutari Kretikos (White) 2003”
White wine with sweet honeyed apples aroma, offering acid balanced and mild taste, mainly made of Crete’s unique Vilana grapes.
