“New Suntory Museum of Art” (Provisional Title) Opens in Roppongi
— opens with new look in spring 2007, as new era's museum—
The Suntory Museum of Art (Location: Tokyo Suntory Building, 11th Fl., Moto-Akasaka 1-2-3, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Curator: Nobutada Saji) is to be renewed and open as a museum of a new era in spring 2007, after being relocated to Roppongi, Tokyo. It will be closed until the renewal and opening, along with the relocation of the Tokyo Office, Suntory Ltd. The Suntory Museum of Art and the Tokyo Office are currently located in the same building.
The planned site for the opening “New Suntory Museum of Art” (Provisional Title) is a section of the Former Defense Agency site in Roppongi (9 chome, Akasaka) that is under a large-scale redevelopment plan called “The Tokyo Mid-town Project”. The New Suntory Museum of Art will gain ground to play a part as cultural facilities of the project. The project’s grand opening will be in spring 2007, with a theme of “urban development that transmits new Japanese values”. Additionally, the area in Roppongi is expected to transmit new information of art, with the opening of national museum. The area is where many cultural and art facilities collect around, including the Suntory Hall.
The Suntory Museum of Art, since its opening in November 1961 as the pioneer of Suntory’s cultural business, has held various program exhibitions while gathering and researching artwork that expresses Japanese traditional lifestyle with a theme of “beauty in lifestyle”. It has attracted popularity among many customers to this day, as a full-fledged urban museum.
With this relocation, the Suntory Museum of Art will strive for the further advancement of art and cultural activities as a timely museum, while playing a role as a cultural hub for “The Tokyo Mid-town Project”.
