“Salute to Akasaka-mitsuke: Suntory Museum of Art Fine Art Exhibition” << Art in Life 1975-2004 >> to be opened

The Suntory Museum of Art (Curator: Nobutada Saji) is to open “Salute to Akasaka-mitsuke: Suntory Museum of Art Fine Art Exhibition” << Art in Life 1975-2004 >> from Saturday 18th to Thursday 30th December 2004.

The Museum, since its foundation at Marunouchi of Tokyo in 1961, has collected and exhibited the arts and crafts of old Japan with a basic theme of << Art in Life >> to provide “a place where people can personally experience and appreciate the finest of the traditional arts created by the Japanese forebears.” Relocated to Akasaka-mitsuke in 1975, the Museum has hosted 303 exhibitions to date. The collection of mainly Japanese antiques and glass arts, which was started from scratch, has grown to approximately 3,000 pieces including one national treasure and twelve important cultural properties.

Upon closing of the Akasaka-mitsuke exhibitions at the end of 2004, the Museum will be relocated and newly open in Roppongi by spring 2007. This << Art in Life >> exhibition marks a conclusion of the current collections to showcase around 80 artifacts including paintings, lacquer crafts, ceramics, dyeing and weaving, glasses and others, while reflecting its cultural activities for the past years through its original theme.
