Suntory to enter wine market in Shanghai, China
- releasing two red wines under “Li Ang Zhuang Yuan” brand -
Suntory Ltd. is to enter the fast-growing wine market in China by releasing two selections, “Ganhong Putaojiu (‘dry red’)” and “Gaoji Ganhong Putaojiu (‘superior dry red’),” under “Suntory - Li Ang Zhuang Yuan” brand in Shanghai area, starting Friday 17 September.
Suntory's presence in China began with whiskey export bound for Beijing-based hotels in 1979. After Jiangsu Suntory Foods Co., Ltd. was established in 1984 as the first foreign beer joint venture to set a ground in Jiangsu Province, the beer and soft drink business in Shanghai was subsequently undertaken in 1995. The sales area has been expanded since then due to its aggressive reinforcement of new products, which has resulted in a steady advancement in the market. Suntory has notably gained a firm footing in Shanghai, the city with remarkable economic drives, with a 45% share in beer and significant market position in soft drink for oolong tea, orange juice, and supplementary drink.
In pursuit of further expansion, Suntory now foresees a fast growing opportunity in the Shanghai wine market to utilize its expertise obtained through success in beer and soft drink. With a timely reinforcement, this wine business is expected to grow as one of the most significant pillars in both Shanghai and the greater China.
