Suntory to publish “Eco Kids Notebook”
- Promoting environmental education to children for our future -
Suntory Ltd. publishes “Eco Kids Notebook (Vol.1 - 3),” an educational material to be used during general study and other classes at elementary schools, promoting environment education to children for our future.
In recent years, more and more elementary schools have adopted environmental issues as a theme during the ‘general study’ classes. The legislation to promote environmental education went into effect as well last fall. Suntory decided to publish “Eco Kids Notebook” for the third to sixth graders to enjoy learning more about “global environment.” The contents are designed in a way that children can not only “learn” about current issues but also be hinted how they can contribute to the world through their daily life in protecting the environment. Each “Notebook” contains a review quiz to deepen their understanding, the “Eco Challenge Sheet” to check their level of contributions in their daily activities, and other columns.
Suntory is set to distribute these materials for environment education at elementary schools upon request.
• Main contents of “Eco Kids Notebook”
Vol.1 “Is the earth getting warmer?”
The first volume deals with energy saving and reduction of carbon-dioxide as “global warming measures.” The introduction includes the causes of and circumstances leading to global warming, along with the examples of preventive actions that can be taken at home.
Vol.2 “Is the earth full of wastes?”
”Waste disposal issues” are brought up in terms of 3R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle). With a key message “resource if recycled, but waste if mixed,” this volume introduces tips for easy waste reduction; recycling labels and mechanism for cans, glasses, and pet bottles; and the examples of corporate contributions.
Vol.3 “Is the earth getting dry?”
The volume focuses on water source preservation and nature protection with a core concept to “protect water and forest.” Discussions emphasize the importance of water, which is the origin of life and precious resource on globe, and the mechanism of forestry to nurture water, getting the children aware of their actions to protect nature.

Furthermore, Suntory started “Kids Dream Project” last June, providing children with a variety of first-hand experiences and opportunities to meet celebrities and experts from various fields in hope for stimulating “dreams” and “challenging spirits” of our future generation.
