Beam Suntory Inc.
As the world’s third largest premium spirits company, Beam Suntory inspires human connections by Crafting the Spirits Brands that Stir the World. Consumers from all corners of the globe call for the company’s brands, including the flagship Jim Beam Bourbon and Yamazaki Japanese Whisky, as well as world renown premium brands including Maker’s Mark, Knob Creek, Hakushu, Hibiki, Teacher’s, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Canadian Club, Courvoisier, Sauza, Pinnacle and Midori. Beam Suntory was created in 2014 by combining the world leader in Bourbon and the pioneer in Japanese Whisky to form a new company with deep heritage, passion for quality, innovative spirit and entrepreneurial culture.
The people of Beam Suntory are the custodians of brands with histories measured in centuries. In 1795, a farmer and grain mill operator named Jacob Beam produced the first barrel of whiskey that would become Jim Beam, our flagship bourbon brand, now overseen by seventh generation Jim Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe. The history of Suntory began in 1899 when the founder Shinjiro Torii started producing sweet wines. He then courageously produced the first Japanese whisky and today, Suntory is the No.1 whisky distiller in Japan, known for its flagship single malt whisky Yamazaki, Hakushu and the blended whisky Hibiki. Suntory has at its core a “Yatte Minahare – Go for it!” spirit that encourages its team to dream big … the very same values and entrepreneurial spirit that built Beam for more than 200 years and that guide Beam Suntory as a global leader in premium spirits.
The Americas region serves as the single largest sales and profit driver of Beam Suntory and continues to play an integral role in the growth of the company. It is composed of several established and emerging markets across North and South America.
Beam Suntory continues to strengthen its #2 position in the U.S. – the world’s largest market for spirits. The company’s flagship brand, Jim Beam, hails from Kentucky and is the #1 bourbon in the world. Strong growth in finely crafted bourbons such as Maker’s Mark and Knob Creek reflect the U.S. business’s success in driving premiumization. Though innovations such as Jim Beam Apple and Jim Beam Honey, new consumers are being enticed by the company’s bourbon portfolio. Brands such as Hornitos, Sauza and EFFEN are drawing US consumers to experience the quality of Beam Suntory’s tequila and vodka, and they are increasingly selecting Courvoisier as their cognac of choice.
The region’s Canada business continues to thrive, with Alberta Vodka assuming the #3 position in the country, as innovations such as Canadian Club 100% Rye continues to drive consumers to the Canadian Club family. In Mexico, the second largest market for tequila and one of the most dynamic emerging markets for the company, sales continue to gain traction, with the Jim Beam family and Hornitos fostering a following of premium-focused consumers. Beam Suntory is also expanding its business’s geographic footprint in South America, by garnering awareness for premium brands like Teacher’s in Brazil.
With a blend of established and emerging markets, International is Beam Suntory’s largest and most diverse region. Spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, South East Asia, China, Oceania, and encompassing the Global Travel Retail channel, International is home to some of Beam Suntory’s most successful markets, as well as some of the most exciting growth opportunities for our brands.
From Germany - the number two Bourbon export market, where Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark are driving growth; to Global Travel Retail - where we have built our reputation as the world’s leading whisky powerhouse; to the UK - where Courvoisier is already the clear leader in Cognac; to Australia - where Jim Beam is the #1 spirits brand, the International Region’s powerful developed markets continue to drive value for Beam Suntory.
A number of crucial growth markets are also part of the International Region, including India, where we are leveraging Teacher’s leading position in one of the world’s biggest Scotch markets to drive growth across our portfolio; Russia, where we continue to grow our market share led by Courvoisier, Jim Beam and our premium whisky portfolio; and China, where stronger Routes to Market and the combined portfolio of Beam Suntory will drive long-term growth.
Our Japan business has a broad portfolio of spirits including whisky, RTD products, shochu and liqueurs. The premium Japanese whisky brands include Yamazaki and Hakushu malt whiskies and Hibiki blended whisky, all gaining high reputations from consumers around the world for their quality and craftsmanship. Bourbon is also gaining popularity in Japan, led by rapidly growing Jim Beam. Japan has always sought new frontiers in whisky and has successfully reinvigorated the appeal of whisky in Japan by introducing the new drinking style of highball (mixing whisky with soda) with the brands Kakubin and Toris<Classic>.
Beam Suntory will continue to excite the Japanese consumers by offering wide varieties (Whisky, RTD, liqueurs, etc.) of value added products.
RTD: “Ready-to-drink” alcoholic beverages, such as canned chu-hi drinks and canned cocktails with a relatively low alcohol content.
