Cultivating a New Shochu Market

Shochu, a traditional Japanese distilled spirit, has won great popularity due to its healthy image, its ability to mix with flavored drinks, and the variety of types made from different basic ingredients.
Suntory sells a wide range of shochu in four categories: ko–otsu blended shochu, otsu–rui shochu (pot–still distilled), domestic ko–rui shochu and Korean shochu. We are ambitiously pursuing the shochu business both domestically and internationally, aiming to win over new shochu drinkers and expand the demographic of shochu aficionados able to appreciate the breadth and depth of this class of alcoholic beverage.

Ko–otsu Blended Shochu

Our selection of blended shochu products includes Muginoka and Hanaimo, which are perfect for a relaxing evening drink at home, and Barley Shochu Wanko and Sweet Potato Shochu Nanko, better suited for drinking at restaurant gatherings. More people are discovering the attractions of blended shochu – its rich flavor, easy–to–drink quality and taste that never fails to please.

Otsu–rui Shochu

Complementing these products are the distinctive shochu brands we have developed through tie–ups with shochu distilleries in Kyushu and Okinawa, whose unique historical and cultural roots are firmly established. We have six ongoing partnerships with distilleries and plan to continue actively promoting these genuine, regional shochu varieties to our customers.

Suntory will communicate the enjoyment of selecting genuine shochu products developed jointly through tie-ups with six distilleries.
Nagasaki / Iki no Hana (Ichi no Kuni, barley shochu)
Kumamoto/Fukuda Shuzou Shoten (Hana, rice shochu)
Okinawa / Shinzato Shuzou (Churajima, awamori, traditional rice shochu)
Miyazaki / Kagura Shuzou (Kagura no Mai, buckwheat shochu)
Kagoshima / Hamada Shuzou (Kuromaru, sweet potato shochu)
Okinawa / Mizuho Shuzou (Tenryugura, aged awamori, traditional rice shochu)
Kyogetsu Green

Korean Shochu
Since 1996, Suntory has maintained a tie–up with Doosan Liquor (now part of Lotte Co., Ltd.) in Kangnung, South Korea, a region endowed with a rich natural environment and excellent water. We market this distillery’s Kyogetsu Green, a superior Korean shochu of unwavering quality made with natural water from the Mt. Sorak watershed. Well–suited to Japanese tastes, the refreshing flavor of Kyogetsu Green has earned it such widespread popularity among consumers that it has become the market leader among Korean shochu brands in Japan. We will continue to promote the appeal of Mt. Sorak natural water, and build the popularity of Korean shochu.

Domestic Ko–rui Shochu
We also promote domestic ko–rui shochu, primarily our Daijuhyo brand, by recommending to customers its excellent properties as a base for mixed drinks.
