Muromachi period
The beautifully shaped Shinnari-type kettle for the tea ceremony was cast in Ashiyazu, a locale in Yamaganosho near the mouth of the Onga River in the province of Chikuzen (present-day Fukuoka Prefecture). The neck is slightly tapered at the base, and the rim gently opens outward. The two ears (kantsuki) are shaped like devil masks. The body of the kettle is covered in a hailstone design, except for the lowermost section. In the smoothed circular area of the front and back halves, two of the Seven Dieties of Good Fortune, Shoulaojen and Pu-tai, are depicted. The bronze lid is cast in a gentle bulging shape, and has a spherical bud-shaped knob on top. The smooth texture of this ironware kettle is commonly referred to as "catfish skin". Ashiya tea ceremony kettles with an overall hailstone design and an inset ring (or square) design are common.
