Muromachi period
This kettle for tea ceremony was made in Tenmyo-cho, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture. The body has a gently rounded shape that bulges in the middle. The shoulder is slightly raised(koshiki-guchi). Since this part resembles that of paper lantern, this kettle is called chochin-gama(paper lantern kettle). The texture of the body is rough and rugged, a desired and tasteful feature typical of old Tenmyo ironware. The ears(kantsuki) are in the shapes of small animals. The bottom was modified in later years. The simple shape, combined with the rugged surface texture, creates a wild, sturdy kind of figurative beauty.
