Height: 17.6 Diameter(mouth): 23.9
Momoyama to early Edo periods

The wide-mouthed kettle for tea ceremony has a design of a monkey in a tree extending its arm toward the moon which is reflected below in a lake. This motif is frequently used in brush-and-ink paintings. Several tea kettles with the same motif are housed in the Tokyo National Museum and elsewhere, indicating that the motif which reflects the influence of Zen Buddhism was widely used for tea kettles. The casting technique is superb, and the execution of the serene ripples on the lake and the sleek lines of the monkey's fur is exquisite, reminiscent of Chinese Mu-qi paintig. The kettle's name "Nomizo" is that of the family to which it belonged.
