Claude Champy is a French potter. Born in 1944, he studied pottery at Ecole des Metiers d'Art. In 1988, this square covered box was awarded the Suntory Prize. The thickly applied glaze reminds one of traditional Japanese pottery. The shape is subtly misshapen. The Suntory Museum of Art has acquired four of his works. He is noted for his expression of the expansiveness of the earth and the universe.
