"Octagonal mirror case"

Heian period

The octagonal mirror case and its fitted cover have tin-reinforced edges. The surface of the cover is carved in the shape of eight petals. The black lacquer which once covered this case has worn off. The mirror case is coated with antique-rust colored lacquer called kasuga-sabi. A mirror case of similar design is preserved in Kasuga Shrine, one of the votive objects dedicated to that shrine in the Heian period. Today, this case contains no mirror. The octagonal Heian period mirror preserved in Kasuga Shrine fits this case perfectly and is possibly the mirror that belongs with this case.
