Kamakura period
The fitted octagonal incense box has a slightly curved cover. The rims of the cover and body are reinforced with tin. A cord is meant to pass through the metal fittings on either side of the box. The motif of bamboo growing on a sandy beach is rendered with the togidashi-maki-e technique. In this technique, the design is delineated with lacquer, sprinkled with gold powder and, after drying, polished with a piece of charcoal to re-expose the design. Needle engraving is employed to draw the leaf veins and bamboo joints. The background is finished in hirame-ji. To produce this texture, coarse flakes of gold leaf are sprinkled on the half-dried lacquered surface, and after it hardens, another coat of lacquer is applied, and then polished to expose the metal flakes. The inside of the box is also finished in hirame-ji, but not as densely as the exterior of the box. The gold pattern looks slightly reddish, due to a red lacquer undercoat in the maki-e design.
