Muromachi period

This desk has brush stops at both ends of the top panel. The four legs have foliate panels for reinforcement and decoration. The surface is finished in nashi-ji (pearskin finish) on black lacquer. The top panel has a design of chrysanthemums growing on mounds of earth. Chrysanthemums and rocks are rendered in slightly raised maki-e over which silver-plated copper nacre is sprinkled. Togidashi-maki-e technique is employed for the mounds of earth and the mist. Pieces of cut gold and silver are added to the chrysanthemums, and on the petals drawn by tsukegaki (fine-lined lacquer painting followed by a sprinkling of gold powder). The overall design conveys a mood that is subtle and profound and characteristic of the lacquerware produced in the Muromachi period.
