Muromachi period
This wine bottle of Negoro lacquerware has a black-lacquered ground with a topcoat of red lacquer. Negoro Temple in Wakayama Prefecture was the home of this very highly regarded lacquerware. Until the temple was burned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 13th year of Tensho(1585), fine quality lacquer, particularly tableware, was produced there for about 300 years. This wine bottle was used as a sake container during feasts. The shape was formed on a turning wheel. The bottle has an extended shoulder and gradually narrows toward the base.
