This chest was used by practitioners of Shugen-do (a religious sect derived from a mixture of Tantric Buddhism and Japan's ancient mountain worship), and traveling monks, to carry their Buddhist sutras, ritual articles and clothes. The three-legged chest has four compartments from top to bottom. The upper three compartments can be opened with sliding doors. The door has the design of blooming camellias carved in relief with impressed gold foil in the center of the flowers. Red and black lacquers are applied to the flowers and leaves respectively. The narrow panel by the sliding door is carved in a chrysanthemum design on a ground of a roughly woven fence. The Jigenji Temple preserves a similar container with a camellia design which is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
