(Click on the photograph for a larger image.)

38.5x7.5x7.5
Momoyama period

This long rectangular letter box has rounded corners and ridges, with the cover entirely eclipsing the box in kabuse-buta style. Metal fittings are attached to the side panels of the box through which cord was strung. The entire surface is coated with black lacquer. From the top to the sides of the cover, autumn flowers, such as Japanese bush clover and chrysanthemums are pictured. The decorative techniques employed are: flat maki-e, e-nashiji, and needle engraving. This is one of the most exquisite letter boxes of Kodaiji maki-e in the collection.
