Edo period

The four-tiered covered food boxes are entirely coated with black lacquer. The cover and the four sides of the box are decorated with gold maki-e design of boldly enlarged hydrangea against an arched bridge spanning a stream. In the cluster of hydrangea there is a scattering of embedded mother-of-pearl. The veins of the leaves are rendered by needle engraving. The stream is highly stylized, reflecting Edo period taste. This design reminds one of the sound of a rushing stream in rainy season; a time when the hydrangea bloom. Although this piece was made in the early Edo period, it retains the dynamism of the Momoyama period.
