Muromachi period

This flattened drum-shaped wine container is equipped with feet and a mouth that have a chrysanthemum petal design at its base. While the side of the body is fashioned in Shunkei lacquerware, that allows the wood grain to show, the disc-shaped front and back are coated with black lacquer. One face has the design of grapes and squirrels, and the other has millet, quail, peonies and butterflies. The circumference is decorated with a katawa-tsunagi ( scallops ) pattern. All these design are made with chinkin, a technique of engraving fine lines on a lacquered surface and filling them with gold powder.
