60.9x57.5
Edo period

The large, five-tiered hexagonal food container has nested boxes in saka-inro-buta style to allow a flush surface. The foot is also hexagonal and spreads toward the bottom. The entire surface has an undercoat of black lacquer, on which red lacquer is applied. The surface is decorated with the background pattern of shippo-tsunagi (interlinking circles). On the cover and side of the boxes, large peony branches are designed in chinkin. The surface of the foot is also decorated in a similar design, employing the same technique. The decoration is elaborate and sophisticated, a product of highly advanced, experienced craftsmanship.
