Momoyama period
To make this bowl,"iron sand,"containing a high percentage of iron oxide, was applied to the entire inner surface, and a tree was depicted by scraping off the glaze. The unglazed white part and the gray streaks on white ground are regarded as the rock and roots of the tree, respectively. The branches, leaves and the three birds flying in the sky are rendered vividly and freely within the limitation of the circular format. The flattened rim is stretched in four diagonal directions to create the semi-square form. Half of the flat rim is glazed in gray, while the other half is left unglazed. The glazed portion is decorated with lines that look like straw, while the unglazed part is dotted. The bowl has four small feet. The glaze is well-fired and smooth, although the glaze was applied in an uneven manner.
