Oribe type Mino ware"

Height: 30.6
Momoyama period

This candlestick is inspired by the Spanish and Portuguese merchants who first arrived in Japan in the Momoyama period. The figure holds a large plate on his head, on which a nail is fitted to fix a candle. The figure has large up-turned eyes, thick continuous eyebrows, and a Westerner's nose. He wears wide pants called karusan and a coat with a chrysanthemum-patterned collar, and holds a woven rattan basket that looks like a creel. This candlestick was thrown on a potter's wheel, reshaped, and coated with a green glaze which covers only the upper part of the body. It is likely that this object was made in the Motoyashiki kiln, where so many masterpieces of Oribe ware were produced.
