Red circular motifs of sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum flowers decorate the sides of this piece. When all the boxes are aligned correctly, two semicircular designs join to form one circle. The size of these boxes is virtually the same as that of the covered three-tiered boxes handed down in Higashikuni. This is one of the largest objects of Satsuma cut glass in existence. Iridescent dots mark the inner surface of the boxes. Historical documents claim that Satsuma cut glass with red overlay was made by using gold and copper. All the existing red cut-glass objects were made using copper, and are therefore crimson-colored.
