By Nonomura Ninsei
Height: 12.5 Diameter(mouth, base): 14.8, 10.5
C.1657
This incense burner is beautiful in shape, the body swelling generously from the shoulder and becoming quite narrow toward the base. On the opaque whitish glaze ground particular to Ninsei's work are the Wheel and other implements used in Esoteric Buddhism, as well as an arabesque motif, all rendered in red, green and blue enamels embellished with gold pigment. The delineation of the motifs and the application of the colors are done with extreme care. An inscription carved on a very similar incense burner in the collection of the Fujita Museum of Art names Ninsei as the artist and gives a date of Meireki 3 (1657). This work was probably made around the same time. On the bottom is pressed a small, round seal reading "Ninsei".
