Edo period
Since Nabeshima ware was produced by a clan kiln, it was not sold on the open market; its primary use was as gifts among feudal lords. The rim of this large plate is turned sharply inward, and in the interior are scattered branches of flowering cherry rendered in green, yellow, and red pigments. Placed at three points on the back of the dish are peony arabesques, and a motif of double-petaled flowers encircles the slightly narrowed foot. The rich, refined designs and the mastery of technical skill seen in the gracefully curving lines are characteristic features of polychrome Nabeshima ware.
