About The Museum | Tea-Ceremony Room

Tea ceremony room "Genchôan

The tea ceremony room utilizes a large portion of the previous room's materials which were moved from Akasakamitsuke, such as pillars, fusuma (papered sliding doors) partitions and a ceiling, in the new concept with an additional eight-mat hall designed by Mr. Kengo Kuma. The window is styled with a modern touch, and has the middle sill and shoji (papered partition doors) to cover the upper half while the lower half remains open, featuring an outside view extended from the rock veranda. Surrounded by the skyscrapers of Tokyo Midtown, this is an oasis with a peaceful ambience in the midst of the metropolis. This "Genchôan" was built at the 1961 foundation of Suntory Museum of Art, and named by the Urasenke Grand Master XIV, Sekiko Soshitsu (Mugensai), a.k.a. Tantansai; this new facility makes the third generation through Marunouchi and Akasakamitsuke.
