Suntory Hakushu Distillery > Facility Information > Bird sanctuary

Watch as a variety of sedentary and migratory bird species frolic in Japan’s first bird sanctuary. Sensitive to environmental changes, birds serve as a barometer of the health of the area’s beautiful natural surroundings and water resources.
Blessed with Mt. Yatsugatake to the north and Mt. Kaikomagatake of the Southern Alps to the west as well as lush forestland and a number of clear-flowing water sources, the area around Suntory’s Hakushu Distillery serves as a stop on the migratory routes of various bird species. Visitors are welcome to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the observation roads that snake their way through the forest. The sanctuary, which is usually open daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, is visited each year by some 50 bird species.
You may be unable to view some species due to the times at which they are active.
Great tit, long-tailed tit, Japanese bunting, etc.
In the summer: Cuckoo, house martin, etc.
In the winter: Goldcrest, rustic bunting, redstart, red-flanked bluetail, pale thrush.
