

"Blue Rose Development Team," jointly organized by Suntory Ltd. and Florigene Ltd. of Australia(*), is to receive "Special Technology Award" from Japan Bioindustry Association. Representing the team, Yoshikazu Tanaka of the Suntory Institute for Advanced Technology Application will give a special speech at the award ceremony (Venue: Mielparque Tokyo, Minato-ku, Tokyo) on Monday 25 October.
Suntory and Florigene started this joint technological development in 1990, and successfully unveiled the world's first genetically modified "blue rose" whose petals contained nearly 100% blue pigments in June 2004.
This award is granted to Suntory "Blue Rose Development Team" as a result of their "great achievement to realize the world's dream, not only casting a positive image to biotechnology and bioindustry, but also exhibiting a competitive edge of a Japanese technology for the advancement of the world."
Japan Bioindustry Association (JBA) is dedicated to promote bioscience and bioindustry synthetically across industries, academia, and public sector. Supporting advancement and sustainable development of the industrial structure, JBA aims to improve life and society through R&D and sound industrialization in bioscience with a broad perspective in cooperation with the multiple sectors. JBA screens the outstanding individuals and/or groups for their contributions in the bioindustry's progress, and grants "Arima Memorial Bioindustry Association Award" every year and "Bioindustry Association Special Award" on an ad-hoc basis. This "Special Award" presentation is the second time after the Nobel Prize winner Koichi Tanaka in 2002.
