Suntory Environmental Conservation Medium-Term Targets: Enlarging Fresh Water Sources, Reducing CO2 Emissions

Suntory Limited continues to take a diversified approach to environmental conservation under a corporate philosophy of "Resonating with People and Nature." Targeting water in particular (indispensible in production), we have established "Water for Life, Suntory" as a corporate slogan to promote a respect for water and water-producing ecosystems in business activities. Suntory's renewed commitment to the environment as a cornerstone of business operations will contribute to sustainable environmental management through the following medium-term targets regarding enlargement of fresh water sources and reduction of CO2 emissions.

  • (1) Enlarge managed sources of fresh water to 7,000 hectares by 2011

In 2003, Suntory launched the "Forest of Natural Water" project, which protects water-producing ecosystems, helps ensure biodiversity, and offers reforestation opportunities that strengthen ties between people and the natural environment. To promote groundwater recharge and offset the water used by Suntory Group plants in Japan, Suntory managed 1,795 hectares (nearly 7 square miles) of water-producing areas as of the end of 2008. By 2011, we intend to enlarge this area four-fold, to 7,000 hectares (27 square miles).

  • (2) Reduce CO2 emissions 20% by 2012

CO2 emissions from Suntory Group business activities in Japan reached approximately 2.55 million tons in 2007, according to our analysis. While continuing to promote current programs for efficient production and distribution, Suntory is also taking on a range of initiatives-using lighter beverage containers, introducing more energy-efficient vending machines, and other approaches-to cut emissions 20% by 2012, bringing emissions to a level of 2.04 million tons.

Setting new environmental targets related to business activities will support our stronger commitment to sound environmental management.
