The Suntory whiskies YAMAZAKI 1984, HIBIKI 17 Years Old, and HAKUSHU 18 Years Old were honored with gold medals this October at the 14th International Spirits Challenge in the U.K.

YAMAZAKI 1984 was released this year to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the YAMAZAKI brand. Again the brand, emerging internationally, was recognized with an outstanding award after receiving a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in July.

This also marks the seventh consecutive award for Suntory whisky at the event since YAMAZAKI 12 Years Old received a gold medal in 2003. Suntory is proud of the solid reputation we have earned for the exceptional quality of our whiskies and our unsurpassed blending techniques.

International Spirits Challenge

This is a spirits competition held annually in the U.K. In the whisky category, 10 judges—master blenders or distillers from whisky distilleries around the world, and other authorities—taste nearly 300 whiskies entered in the competition. Winners are determined by unanimous agreement of the judges.

THE YAMAZAKI SINGLE MALT WHISKY, distilled in 1984

Made exclusively of carefully selected malt whiskies distilled and aged in 1984. Blended mainly of whisky aged in mizunara casks. This imparts what has come to be prized as an "Asian" fragrance distinctive in Japanese whisky, which complements the rich flavors. (700 ml, 100,000 yen*)

SUNTORY HIBIKI 17 YEARS OLD

Some 30 varieties of malt, aged at least 17 years, are carefully chosen and blended with mellow grain whisky of the same age. A rich, sumptuous harmony was sought for this premier Suntory whisky. Gorgeous, sweet, and full fragrances are balanced with elegant woodiness from malt aged over many years. Mellow yet substantial on the palate, with a satisfying finish. (700 ml, 10,000 yen*)

THE HAKUSHU SINGLE MALT WHISKY, AGED 18 YEARS

Malts aged for 18 years at the Hakushu Distillery impart distinctive fragrances—flowery and rich, reminiscent of ripe fruit. An exquisite harmony of complexity and richness in body with sweetness and mature woodiness on the nose. A subtly smoky aroma lingers in the pleasant finish.
