Leveraging the Power of Good Natural Water to Achieve a Nicely Balanced Flavor

Because beer is approximately 90 percent water, Suntory focuses special attention on this basic raw material throughout the production process. This is why we have constructed our breweries only in carefully selected areas endowed with good-quality water with balanced content.
In celebration of its 20th anniversary in 2006, our Malt's beer was reborn with a new identity as Natural Water <Draft> Beer Malt's. Firm in our conviction that truly good beer can be produced only with good-quality natural water, we have succeeded in achieving a nicely balanced flavor that beer-lovers find truly satisfying. We have also developed a unique malt fractionating technology to extract the ingredients of malt, realizing a "pronounced nicely balanced flavor" with a "clear aftertaste".

Winner of Japan's First Grand Gold Medal at the Monde Selection

To make the world's greatest beer…. This desire, which every brewing engineer feels, was the starting point for The Premium Malt's.
Inquiring into the good-quality raw materials, we use 1.2 times as much carefully screened malt in The Premium Malt's as in our standard beers and twice the quantity of European fine-aroma hops (comparison with the ratio of bitterness compound in our standard beer) to realize beer's essential good flavor. A similar intense focus on the production process has led to employment of such techniques as "aroma-rich hopping", which draws out an elegant, luxuriant aroma, "double decoction", which extracts the ultimate fullness of malt, and "careful maturation", which allows enough time to realize a pronounced nicely balanced flavor.
In recognition of this quality,The Premium Malt's won Japan's first-ever Grand Gold Medal in the Selection of Beers division at the Monde Selection international food and beverage competition held in Europe, the birthplace of beer, in 2005. With this prestigious award, our excellent brewing technology and superlative quality won acknowledgement from the world at large. In 2006, moreover, The Premium Malt's captured the award for a second straight year.

A Constant Commitment to Adding New Value to Products

Suntory pursues ongoing R&D inspired by a desire to present customers with new products, new pleasures and new value.
We established the happoshu market with the introduction in 1994 of Hop's Draft, a fermented beverage that pleased customers with its good taste and low price. This was followed by the launch of Magnum Dry, which has established its own original market position as a "dry" happoshu.
We then responded to our health-conscious customers' needs by introducing Diet Draft, the industry's first low-calorie happoshu, creating a new base of enthusiasts. We also launched Jokki(Beer Mug)Draft, moreover, a new-category product employing corn as the basic ingredient that achieves a balance between a "robust feel" and "sharp aftertaste". In this way, we have built a favorable reputation by constantly delivering new palatability.

All Suntory beers and happoshu use pure, high-quality natural water drawn from deep underground springs with no alteration (the Tanzawa ground water system).

Breathing New Life into the Chinese Beer Market

Suntory initiated the beer business in China with the establishment in 1984 of China Jiangsu Suntory Foods Co., Ltd., the first joint beer brewery involving foreign capital in China, in the city of Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province.
Building on achievements made possible by our know-how of Chinese business acquired through this beer business in Jiangsu Province, we went on to enter the remarkably fast-growing beer business in Shanghai. We established Shanghai Suntory Brewing Co., Ltd. (later renamed as the current Suntory Brewing (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.) in 1995 and launched Suntory Beer White and Suntory Beer Gold in 1996. Through such efforts as conducting bold advertising campaigns employing airships and TV commercials, offering "refreshing" beer matched to the taste of the people of Shanghai and implementing unique sales activities and distribution policies, we boosted the performance of Suntory beer rapidly to capture the largest market share in Shanghai in 1999.
We have continued to promote our business energetically since-becoming the first to conduct production and sales of draft beer in the Shanghai area, for example, and acquiring the Donghai Brewery and Shanghai Foster's Brewery Co., Ltd.-with the result that our share of the beer market in this area is now approximately 60 percent. We are currently building up sales in Suzhou and Wuxi, moreover, the other principal cities in the Shanghai vicinity, and our beer business in China continues its steady growth.
We look forward to continuing our pursuit of dynamic business development with regional roots in the growing Chinese market.
