Suntory Beverage & Food Limited (SBF) introduced a cap with a diameter of 28 millimeters for aseptic filling products*¹ in January at the Haruna Plant (Shibukawa, Gunma). At just 2.04 grams*², it is the lightest cap thus far, and it will be sequentially expanded to other plants.

●Overview of the lighter cap
SBF has conducted initiatives in the past with the aim of reducing environmental burden. For example, it introduced a lighter cap—which weighs 2.05 grams and has a diameter of 30 millimeters—exclusively for Mineral Water Suntory Tennensuii in 2008. The new 28-millimeter diameter cap will reduce the weight of caps for aseptic filling products such as Iyemon Green Tea, Suntory Oolong Tea, and GREEN DAKARA from between 2.65 and 2.75 grams to 2.04 grams, a roughly 25% reduction.

SBF cooperated with the cap manufacturer to design the cap to minimize costs for modifying existing filling facilities, striving to create an industry standard that can be used anywhere in Japan. In this way, it is possible for manufacturers to supply products even upon earthquakes and other unforeseen circumstances. This lighter cap will also reduce the amount of polyethylene resin used and help cut annual CO2 emissions by approximately 2,100 tons.
SBF will continue making proactive efforts to develop products that fulfill needs, and implementing environmental countermeasures related to packaging.
