Since its birth in 1923, the history of Suntory Whisky has been the legacy of Japanese whisky itself. The creation and the innovation of Japanese whisky was pioneered by Suntory and continues to be perfected through its artisans.

1899 Shinjiro Torii (the first master blender) starts the Torii Shoten store in Osaka.
1907 Akadama Port Wine, a sweet grape wine, was released and became a huge success - the benefit of this knowledge led to the birth of a whisky project.
1921 Kotobukiya Limited was founded.
1923 Construction of the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first malt whisky distillery, begun in Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto-marking the first step toward the production of Japanese whisky.
1924 Yamazaki Distillery completed in November; distillation initiated in December.
1929 Suntory Shirofuda (white label), Japan's first genuine whisky, launched.
1937 Suntory KAKUBIN (square bottle) whisky launched.
1946 Torys Whisky launched.
1950 Release of Suntory OLD.
1955 Success of Torys Whisky, Torys Bars and Suntory Bars opening one after another.
1960 Suntory Royal whisky launched to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Company's founding.
1973 50th Anniversary of Whisky-making - Hakushu Distillery established in the quest for diversity in malts.
1984 Suntory Single Malt Whisky YAMAZAKI released.
1989 Suntory HIBIKI whisky launched.
1994 Suntory Single Malt Whisky HAKUSHU released.
2003 Suntory Single Malt Whisky YAMAZAKI 12 Years Old captures a Gold Award at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) in the United Kingdom.
2010 Suntory awarded Whisky Distiller of the Year at Icons of Whisky and Distiller of the Year at the ISC in the United Kingdom.
