The climate of Tomi no Oka
A magnificent stretch of sloping terrain with southerly exposure.
Our vineyard enjoys full sun throughout the day.
Yamanashi Prefecture is known for its low annual rainfall, and Tomi no Oka in particular is one of the least rainy regions in Japan-ideal conditions for viticulture. A ring of high mountains (the Japanese Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, Mt. Fuji, and Okuchichibu) protects Tomi no Oka from rain clouds. Thanks to these mountains, the low pressure that typically forms during the spring and fall cannot approach Tomi no Oka.
Tomi no Oka is further blessed by its location adjacent to Akenomachi in the City of Hokuto, known for Japan's longest annual hours of sunshine. The south-facing slope of Tomi no Oka is ideal for grapevine cultivation. Due to the high altitude, the diurnal temperature range is greater than 10˚C on many days. The greater temperature range offers deeper-colored fruit and higher sugar content.
