On April 2, 2018, Reexamining Japan in Global Context's 13th seminar took place in Tokyo. The theme of the event was "Mass Media in Japan: Fake News in the World." The first presentation was given by Daisuke Nakai, Associate Editor of the City News Department of the Asahi Shimbun.

In his presentation titled "The Japanese Media in Flux: Watchdog or Fake News," Nakai-san talked about the relationship between the Japanese media and the Japanese public, especially in terms of trust. He also discussed foreign observers' analysis of Japan's press freedom and proposed changes to Japan's Broadcast Act.

The second presentation was by Andrew Cohen, Associate Professor at Carlton University's School of Journalism and Communication in Canada. His presentation was titled "The War on Truth in Donald Trump's America - and Beyond."

Professor Cohen described the current political and media landscape in the United States and other Western countries, as well as the broader economic constraints facing journalists today. He presented a number of suggestions for how journalists might respond to these troubling trends.
