Suntory Beverage & Food conducts its business by drawing on nature’s gifts, such as water and agricultural crops. We believe that sustainability initiatives to protect and nurture nature are inseparable from our business activities. Nature’s gifts are not infinite. That is why we must make effective use of resources and promote reuse.

In providing our products and services, we engage deeply with all stakeholders, including contractors, business partners, and the communities where we operate. Because this is made possible through connections between people, we position respect for human rights, the promotion of diversity, and the development of our people as key themes we must address, and we will contribute to building a world that inspires the brilliance of life.

Here, we would like to introduce the sustainability initiatives on which we are placing particular emphasis.

Water Is at the Heart of Suntory’s Sustainability Initiatives

We will treat “water,” the most important resource in our business activities, with great care, and we will make it our top priority to use it responsibly, return it to nature, and help replenish it — while proactively leading the industry.

To use limited water resources with care, we are thoroughly implementing the “3Rs of Water” across our operations, with a focus on our plants. The “3Rs of Water” refer to initiatives to reduce the amount of water used (Reduce), reuse water repeatedly (Reuse), and treat and regenerate water for reuse (Recycle).

Looking to the future, we are also promoting our “Natural Water Sanctuary” initiative as an effort to return water to nature and nurture it. By leveraging insights from the Suntory Institute for Water Science, we identify the groundwater recharge areas for our plants and conduct activities to help replenish more than twice the volume of groundwater pumped at our domestic plants. These activities are not limited to Japan; we are also steadily expanding our efforts overseas, including in Spain and France.

We also carry out “Mizuiku,” our environmental education program for the next generation. “Mizuiku” is Suntory’s unique program that helps children experience the wonders of nature, recognize the importance of water and the forests that nurture it, and inspires them to think about what they can do to pass water on to the future. The program has expanded beyond Japan to Asia, Europe, and Oceania, with participation from more than 2.1 million children.

In addition to the water initiatives described above, we will focus on seven key themes defined by our company — Water, Containers and Packaging, Climate Action, Raw Ingredients, Health, Human Rights, and Enriching Life — leading collaboration both across the industry and beyond it, and contributing to the realization of a society in which people and nature resonate in harmony.
