Suntory Mineral Water Report

Japan's mineral water market grew by a whopping 30% in 1999, with consumers downing a record 1,132,000 kiloliters of the natural beverage during the year. Suntory's Minami Alps no Tennensui mineral water sold 18.4 million (219,000 kiloliters) cases, up 30% from the previous year, making it the top-selling brand in the market.
According to a survey on mineral water consumption trends conducted by Suntory, most consumers buy mineral water because of taste, reliable quality and health concerns. The survey shows that makers, brands and sources of water are the main criteria for choosing mineral water products. Domestic products have a safe and reliable image, while imported ones have a more fashionable image and are popular among younger generations. The Suntory survey proves that consumers have become increasingly concerned about product safety and quality when purchasing mineral water in the Japanese market..
