Suntory Announces Suntory Prize Winners


The Suntory Foundation announced that its annual Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities in fiscal 2000 has been awarded to 30 works out of a total of 136 entries. The works stem from the fields of political science and economics, literary and art criticism, life and society, and history and civilization. This year, the winners will share a subsidy of 35 million yen. Established in 1979 on the 80th anniversary of the company's foundation, the Suntory Foundation is committed to helping develop cultural and educational programs worldwide.

Suntory Accepting Applications for Harvest Tour


To usher in the wine season, Suntory will host an annual harvest-tour of its Yamanashi Winery in the foothills of Mt. Fuji on September 23 and 24. Up to 80 people will have an opportunity to harvest grapes, attend wine-making lectures and taste various wines. The event demonstrates Suntory's commitment to producing quality wines.

Suntory QUARTERLY No. 63 published


SUNTORY QUARTERLY No. 63 has been published under the central theme "Japanese and Their Sense of Water." The latest issue attempts to explain the relationship between Japanese people and water through an essay, photographs, short stories and interviews with various celebrities. SUNTORY QUARTERLY is a long-standing publication of the Suntory company which addresses various subjects related to food and alcoholic beverages.

Suntory Taking Orders for Special Whisky and Brandy


From July 25 to September 8, Suntory will begin taking orders for a limited supply of special products dubbed SPECIAL BOTTLE COLLECTION. A 600ml container of [SPECIAL WHISKY] bottled in Arita porcelain and a 600ml container of BOTTLE COLLECTION [SPECIAL BRANDY] bottled in Kutani porcelain will retail for 30,000 yen each.

Suntory Marketing Three Domestic Wines


Suntory will begin marketing SAISHOKU KENBI MERLOT [ Red], Fuu [RED] and Fuu [White] on August 22. A 600ml bottle of SAISHOKU KENBI MERLOT [ Red] and a 500ml bottle of Fuu [RED] and Fuu [White] will retail for 590 yen, respectively. In particular, Fuu features an herbal aroma to ease the senses.

Suntory Marketing New Candy Products


Suntory will begin marketing six different candy products between August 29 and September 12. The new products include SOFT DRINK-TASTE CANDY MIX 5 (150 yen), C.C. LEMON TABLET [BAG] (150 yen), C.C. LEMON TABLET [STICK] (100 yen), NACCHAN DROPS [BAG] (180 yen), BOSS CAFE AU LAIT & MILK CANDY [BAG] (200 yen) and HACHMITSU (HONEY) LEMON CANDY [STICK] (100 yen).

Suntory Releases Report on Soothing Effects of Wine Aroma


The aroma of wine helps relax the human mind, according to a joint study conducted by Suntory and Kyorin University. The announcement was made at a meeting of the European Taste and Smell Society" in England on July 20 and 24. The findings were summarized in two papers entitled "Effect of Increased Alpha Waves from Wine Aroma" and "The Causal Relationship Between Relaxation and Increased Alpha Waves." The "European Taste and Smell Society" meeting is held every two years by the European Chemoreception Research Organization (ECRO). ECRO was established in 1970 for the purpose of studying the human body's reaction to taste and smell.

Suntory Opening Food/Beverage Complex


On July 25, 2000, Suntory will open a complex consisting of three shops-AMATO AMATO, an Italian restaurant, CAFÉ SOLARE, a coffee shop, and Cave de Vin, a wine and food shop-on the 1st floor of its Osaka headquarters building. The layout of the complex is unique in that the three stores are inter-connected, allowing visitors to move among them more easily.
Suntory operates many restaurants and bars in Japan, including the fast-food chain First-Kitchen and America's No. 1 fast-food sandwich chain Subway, as well as Restaurant Suntory offering authentic Japanese cuisine in major cities worldwide.

Suntory to Market New Low-Malt Brew for Autumn


Suntory will begin marketing new low-malt brew, "Aki-Nama," on August 22. The new brew, which has an alcohol content of 6.5%, will be sold for a limited time only during the Autumn season and will retail for 145 yen in a 350ml can size.
Aki-Nama is the third low-malt beer to be introduced by Suntory following SUPER HOP'S and MAGNUM DRY. It is aimed at boosting the company's low-malt brew operations .

e-Shopping
Suntory, Partners Going Online


Suntory, SOFTBANK E-COMMERCE CORP., Hishishoku, Yahoo JAPAN and Mercian Corporation have formed a joint venture to sell wine and related food products online. The new company, dubbed "e-Shopping! Wine CORP," will launch a website in November 2000 that will allow consumers to select and order products and search through an abundance of information. The homepage will be titled "eS-Wine."

Suntory to Launch Green Tea Campaign


From the end of July, Suntory will begin a campaign to promote its SHIMIJIMI Ryokucha green tea. During the campaign, the company is giving away four different types of gifts, including a key holder and a strap with a small bell. The latter can be used as a cell phone strap. The gifts are all adorned with the likeness of one or more cats, which symbolize good luck in Japan. A gift will come with every 500ml plastic bottle of the product.
An estimated 2.9 million cases of SHIMIJIMI Ryokucha have been sold in the three months since its launch in March 2000 .

Suntory Continuing Shift to Environment-Friendly Container


Suntory is continuing to introduce a new ecological container for its mainstay whisky and brandy items, including RED, OLD, KAKUBIN, SHIROKAKU, WHITE, ZEN, TORYS, V.O and others. The 100% plastic container has already been introduced in the four-liter size and will now be used in a 2.7-liter size as well. It is easier to recycle than the original container, which was made of a combination of plastic and polypropylene. Moreover, the new container features a stick-on label rather than a painted one, which also simplifies recycling.
Suntory is planning to eventually adopt the environment-friendly container for all its whisky and brandy products .

Suntory to Expand "H" Liqueur Line


On July 18, Suntory will begin marketing H [ LEMON]. A 250ml bottle will retail for 198 yen. At the same time, the company will introduce H [CLEAR DRY] and H [SPICY] in 250ml containers. They will also retail for 198 yen.
Suntory's "H" product line has been well received by consumers, particularly young adults, since its introduction in March 200.
