Suntory Museum of Art to Hold Exhibition


The Suntory Museum of Art will hold an exhibition titled "Sea, Rivers and Lakes - People at the Water's Edge" from June 19 through July 29. The exhibition will focus on the lifestyles of those who live adjacent to waterways. The scenes have been depicted on folding screens, picture scrolls and Ukiyoe printings.

Suntory Quarterly - "Intoxication of Music"


Volume 66 of "Suntory Quarterly" has been published. The latest issue of the magazine, which explores the relationship between fine dining and culture, features stories and essays by popular Japanese writers. The theme of the issue is "Intoxication of Music." The Suntory Quaterly can be found at major bookstores. It retails for 500 yen.

Suntory Announces Carotene Findings at Scientific Meeting


Astazanthin, a health maintenance ingredient having about 1,000 times the nutritional value of Vitamin E, displays a powerful antioxidant effect that is effective in controlling the oxidation of LDL cholesterol in the human blood when it is combined with a certain carotene, according to clinical research conducted by Suntory. Suntory announced its findings at the 55th Japanese Society of Nutrition and Food Service's conference held in Kyoto from May 6 to May 8.

Suntory, NIPPON LEVER Launch LIPTON TEA Campaign


Suntory and NIPPON LEVER will jointly conduct a campaign to promote sales of LIPTON TEA. The campaign will take place from June 5 through July 31. During that time, the companies will give away 10,000 original bottle holders and sweatshirts to those who collect seals from bottles of LIPTON TEA in the 550ml or 1.5 liter size.

The two companies joined hands in September 2000 to market LIPTON TEA in both cans and plastic bottles beginning in February 2001.

Suntory Expands Cocktail Bar CB Line


On May 8, Suntory began marketing Cocktail Bar CB <Kupu Kupu Tropical> and <Putih Putih Lychee>, two new fruit-based premixed cocktails. The products retail for 210 yen each in a 250ml bottle.

The Cocktai Bar CB line was launched in November 2000 and is targeted at young adults. Suntory has since added nine new products to the line.

Suntory Expanding Beer Line


Suntory has begun marketing a refreshing new beer, MALT'S YADONO-HI LABEL, just in time for the summer season. A 633ml bottle sells for 316 yen, while a 500ml bottle is priced at 267 yen. The product hit store shelves May 10.

Suntory Marketing Chocolate Liqueur


On April 24, Suntory began marketing "MOZART Black Chocolate Liqueur" from Austria. The product was first introduced in October 2000 and has been well accepted by Austrians, especially the younger generation. In Austria, the product is typically used to prepare the popular Chocolate Martini. A 350ml bottle of MOZART Black Chocolate Liqueur retails for 1,760 yen.

Suntory Presenting Special Tour to England, Denmark


Suntory will sponsor a free trip to Europe to promote sales of Carlsberg beer. Ten winners (5 couples) will be invited to join an 8-day tour of England and Denmark. They will watch a soccer match and visit the Carlsberg Brewery. As part of the promotional campaign, Suntory also plans to give away-to 1,000 winners-a special "Carlsberg Global Assortment" pack consisting of 2 bottles of Carlsberg Draft beer, 1 bottle of Carlsberg Green Label beer, an original glass and a bottle opener. The promotional campaign lasts from May 1 to July 2.

Suntory Developing C.C. Lemon "Simpsons" Campaign


Suntory will launch a promotional campaign on behalf of its C.C. Lemon carbonated health drink at the end of May. During the campaign period, the company will give away a 500ml plastic bottle cooler in the shape of Homer Simpson of the famous "Simpsons" animated TV show. The present will be given away with each purchase of C.C. Lemon in the 500ml or 1.5 liter size. Last March the company expanded its soft drink line-up by introducing C.C. Grape.

Suntory Expanding Health Drink Lineup


On May 15, Suntory will begin marketing Yubari Melon Bikkle, a new health drink. The product uses xylo-oligosaccharide to increase the presence of bifidobacterium bifidum in the intestines. Bifidobacterium bifidum creates a favorable environment for the growth of "good bacteria" in the large intestine. Yubari Melon Bikkle will be sold only during summer. A 280ml plastic bottle will retail for 130 yen.

Suntory Introducing PEPSI in Colorful Cans


Suntory has begun selling PEPSI in colorful new "bottle cans" that feature the artwork of four popular graphic artists. Sales of the product began May 15 and will be held for a limited time. A 500ml can is priced at 140 yen. Also on May 15, Suntory kicked off sales of PEPSI in a 200ml TRIAL CAN priced at 70 yen. The trial can was originally developed for the company's ongoing "Pepsi Taste Challenge" promotional campaign, which has targeted up to 700,000 consumers. TRIAL CAN sales end in June.

Suntory Marketing Spain's No. 1 Table Wine


Suntory will begin marketing "ELEGIDO," Spain's top-selling talble wine, on May 22. A 750ml bottle (Red/White) will be sold on an open price basis. "ELEGIDO" is produced by Bodegas y Bebidas Grandes Vinos, S.A. Suntory has previously introduced well known table wines from Italy, the United States and France.

Suntory Marketing Mother's Day Gift Sets


Suntory will begin taking orders for special Mother's Day gift sets consisting of a bottle of imported wine and a bouquet of roses. The sets will be marketed through Suntory's website from April 20 to May 7 (11 a.m.). The sets are priced from 5,000 yen to 10,000 yen and a limited quantity are available.

Suntory Ladies Open 2001 Commemorative Bottles


From May 15, Suntory will market Brandy X.O Deluxe and Whisky Royal 12 Years in specially designed containers commemorating the Suntory Ladies Open 2001 golf tournament. Each commemorative bottle features the phrase, 'We Love KOBE,' which serves as a symbolic gesture of support to promote the revival of Kobe, which was devastated by a strong earthquake in 1995. A 500 ml of Brandy X.O Deluxe, which features a female golfer, will retail for 9,500 yen, while a 100 ml golf ball-shaped bottle of Whisky Royal 12 Years will sell for 1,400 yen.

Suntory marketing Summer INAZUMA


Suntory is set to begin marketing "Suntory Summer INAZUMA" sparkling beer. The beer features the highest carbonic acid content of all the products in Suntory's sparkling beer line-up. The product will go on sale May 15 in Western Japan and May 22 in Eastern Japan. The beer will be sold only for the duration of the summer season. A 350ml can will retail for 145 yen and a 500ml can will be priced at 195 yen.

Suntory Issues "2001 Gardening Report"


Suntory released its '2001 Gardening Report' on April 6. The report consists of two sections: 1) an analysis of gardening trends, and 2) an Internet-based survey on consumer preferences and consumption.
First-section findings were as follows:

  • In terms of the overall gardening market, sales of gardening supplies have increased by 121% over the past five years.
  • Over the past five years, the popularity of bedded plants has shot up by 194% compared to potted plants and cut plants.
  • The gardening diffusion rate has increased to 83%.
  • Sales of gardening supplies to Japanese in their 30s has increased by 124%.

As for the Internet poll, Suntory surveyed 248 housewives (aged 30s and 40s) on their gardening-related consumption plans this year. According to the survey, women are looking to buy flowers that are: 1) easy to care for, 2) bright and colorful and 3) in full bloom.

Suntory to Invite Competitors for Cocktail Competition 2001


Suntory and Suntory Allied, Ltd. is inviting professional bartenders to compete in the 2001 Beefeater International Cocktail Competition. The contest will consist of two sections, including a short cocktail and a long cocktail. The final round of competition will take place on July 26 at the British Embassy in Tokyo. Suntory has held the competition since 1997 in order to promote a better understanding of the cocktail. The winner will automatically qualify for the World Competition to be held in October 2001 and will represent Japan. The deadline for applying for the competition is June 8.

Suntory Marketing Whisky Gift Sets


On May 22, Suntory will begin marketing two whisky gift sets. The 'Father's Day Package' includes a bottle of either Suntory Old, Kakubin or Zen brand whiskies and a decorative handkerchief. The 'Jack Daniel Package' includes a bottle of Jack Daniel whisky and a whisky glass etched with the Jack Daniel logo.

Suntory Maketing Supplements


In keeping with the public's growing awareness of health, Suntory will begin marketing 18 types of nutritional supplements on April 10. The supplements are manufactured by U.S.-based Twin Laboratories Inc. They include 11 items in the company's "Natures Herb" line and 7 in the "Vitamin-Mineral" line. The products will be sold by mail order.

Suntory Marketing "Reserve des Barons" and "Duc de Paris"


On April 17, Suntory will begin marketing two French wines, "Reserve des Barons" (red and white), and "Duc de Paris" (two types). The former is produced by J.Calvet & Cie, a long-time supplier of fine wine to royalty in such countries as Sweden and England. "Duc de Paris" is made by C.F.G.V (Compagnie Francaise des Grands Vins), which was established in 1909. The vintner currently commands the largest share of France's sparkling wine market. Each product will be marketed on the open price method for a 500ml bottle.
