Suntory Announces FY2005 Overseas Publication Grants
The Suntory Foundation (Chairman: Nobutada Saji) has selected nine recipients for grants supporting overseas publication of Japanese works in fiscal 2005. The grants total 5.15 million yen.
This assistance program was established to promote a better understanding of Japan overseas by supporting the translation and publishing of significant works on Japan in other languages, as well as publishing original works on Japan in other languages. As a general rule, eligible works must focus on Japan, and be in the fields of social science or humanities, or must be outstanding works by Japanese authors. From a commercial standpoint, these academic and literary works are usually more difficult to translate and publish.
To date, the foundation has contributed to publication efforts for 206 works in twenty languages, which has helped introduce Japanese culture and Japanese academic achievements to a broader audience.
