These paired four-fold screens of autumn and winter scenes originally constituted an eight-fold screen, the other part of which was another eight-fold screen depicting spring and summer. That portion is lost. In addition to the three aligned pine trees also included in the scene are pear, maple, Chinese black pine, Japanese cypress and autumn plants, such as pampas grass, Japanese bush clover, chrysanthemum, and Chinese bellflower. These plants indicate the passage from autumn to winter. The white snow on the tree creates a sharp contrast with the gold ground which emphasizes a warm rich atmosphere. The scrrens also contain various species of birds, such as a Japanese scops owl, redpolls, sparrows, great tits, varied tits Siberian meadow buntings, quails, bullfinches, bush warblers, and bramblings. This masterful flower-and-bird screen was painted by a Tosa school painter some time between the late Muromachi and early Momoyama periods.
