Kamakura period(more precisely, the period of the Southern and Northern Dynasties)

This handscroll tells the story of a monk, Zenkyobo, and his visit to Sanmi-no-Chujo with whom he conversed concerning the Buddhist teachings of the Jodo sect. Unlike the typical practice of adding explanatory notes to handscrolls, this story is told in the form of a dialog, which is written along side the painting. The dialog is numbered serially so the reader can follow it easily. The monochrome painting on white ground gives a simple, yet pure impression. The scene of a housewife cooking in the kitchen, for example, provides important information on the lifestyle of the times.
