Muromachi period
A painting of a poetry competiton in the late Kamakura period was inspired by Jidai-fudo-uta-awase ( a poem-matching competition by poets from different ages ). A pair of artisans from different trades stand apart as they prepare to compete. This handscroll describes the competition between artisans in which they attempt to match thirty-two poems under the theme, "flowers and remembrances." This handscroll is incomplete. The figures are large, and the use of color is restrained and tasteful. Not only is this handscroll a masterpiece of its kind, but it also provides important historical material for understanding the manners and customs of those days.
