In this painting, the old woman,Oyo-no-Ama, a door-to-door pedlar of daily goods, visits the residence of a Buddhist monk. She proposes to introduce him to a maid who will care for him. When the monk agrees, Oyo-no-Ama instructs him to wait in a dark room. The maid arrives, but never utters a word. The delighted monk spends the night with her. In the morning, when he wakes up, he discovers that the maid is Oyo-no-Ama. This story of a monk, who despite his wishes for a young woman gets an old ugly one, is told in a series of humorous paintings.
