After the death of Minamoto-no-Yoshitomo, Tokiwa, his wife, prayed in Kiyomizu Temple and then fled to Yamato with her three children, Imawaka, Otowaka and Ushiwaka, to escape her pursuers. After wandering along snow-covered mountain paths, they finally arrived in the village of Kowata in Fushimi. A sympathetic old couple residing in the village warmly welcomed them. Village women also consoled them by singing folk songs. The figures and facial expressions of Tokiwa and her children are lovely and as innocent as dolls.
