Momoyama period

The rectangular black-lacquered writing box has a smooth fitted cover in kabuse-buta style. The beveled cover has the design of a pine and cherry in full bloom on a wave-washed beach in togidashi-maki-e. The scene is further decorated with auspicious clouds on top, scrolls floating in the waves, and a house, sea shells and plovers on the beach. The design gives a rather congested impression, but the decorative technique is detailed and elaborate. The box accommodates an inset kasuiban panel in which a water dropper and an ink stone are set. On both sides of the kasuiban panel are two nested rectangular boxes with a maki-e design of cherry branches.
