Momoyama period
The mirror stand has a square chest of two drawers for storing cosmetics. A mirror is placed on two protrusions in the form of upturned bracken ferns which extend from the stand. The lowest ends of the stand are inserted into the holes on the top panel of the chest. On the black-lacquered surface of the mirror stand and chest, clouds and autumn flowers such as chrysanthemums and Chinese bellflowers growing from mounds of earth are depicted in maki-e. The techniques of flat maki-e, and e-nashiji (pictorial pearskin finish as the ground) are combined, with the addition of needle engraving. This is a good example of Kodaiji maki-e.
