Metal fittings are attached on the entire surface is finished in ikake-ji(densely sprinkled gold powder) on a black lacquered ground. The cover and four sides of the boxes are decorated with chrysanthemums, Japanese bush clover and Chinese bellflowers growing from mounds of earth, employing such techniques as raised maki-e, tsukegaki, silver studding, bluish gold and mother-of-pearl inlay. The design is elaborate. It is presumed that this article was made by the Igarashi clan, a well-known family that produced fine lacquerware.
